First, the students established the form of their chosen object in a monochromatic scheme, using black and white paint. This helped them to establish values and understand the role of shadows, particularly cast shadows, to create a three-dimensional representation of what they were observing. Using the monochromatic painting as the under-painting, students added color, keeping in mind the values they had established in the monochromatic painting.
Their once monochromatic objects transformed into eccentric, polychromatic creatures.
